Abstract Full Text

The project discusses the dual nature of the Aqueduct: as an emblematic monument of historical, aesthetic and technical importance, as well as an urban element which owes its significance to its scale and morphological distinctiveness. As an impervious wall, a wall between city buildings, a locus of residence, an entrance to the interior of residential blocks or a gateway, the monument becomes a medium of multiple accesses and connections to the city.
The concept of double articulation: At the imposing Aqueduct, a route is formed to run parallel to it; adjusted to the relief of the area, this route highlights the monument and structures its surroundings. Along this route and always in reference with the Aqueduct, a series of constructions/microenvironments are structured in a modular way (a second system of articulations) which consolidate the two distinctive lines: that of the Aqueduct and that of the proposed route.
Pedestrian bridges, observation platforms, exhibition spaces, paving and lighting textures, the square, all constitute the new routes and nodal points of the city. These routes and nodal points, their guiding lines/traces – their intent, their dynamics and their geometry – could also define a movement towards the city, a counter movement to the lack of rhythm and connectivity of urban tissue.
