Dora Papidou | Architectural Design and its Space of Inscription [full text in Spanish]
Doctoral Thesis in Theory and History of Architecture, ETSAB Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, UPC 2014.
Architectural design is viewed as the event of inscription of the signs belonging to a space without actually being present in it; those signs manifested in the space of inscription. This space is opened up by the written traces, iconic and verbal, recorded during the architectural design process. As such, it invites us to turn our attention to the initial stage of this process, where a drawn line that appears at first to be undefined and imprecise or a written word that seems to be incoherent indicate the progression and completion of the design. Architectural design’s space of inscription, as it came to be known, encapsulates an extensive field of research within which the gesture of architectural design is interpreted in an inherent way: beginning with writing and inscription – inscription being always denoted by writing – architectural design is interpreted, both on an ad hoc basis and in terms of its historical context, avoiding the metaphoric convergence or even the superficial identification of writing with architectural design, and ultimately focusing on their common origins.
