Abstract Full Text

The design of an ecological city (Ecopolis) of 12.000 inhabitants, southwest of Sofia and adjacent to the ring road, at the foothills of Mount Lyulin (on rocky terrain with steep 8 to 30 percent slopes, amidst rushing torrents and a lake), is challenging “by its very nature”. The city, which does not have a central park, is penetrated by greenery and deconstructed as it stretches over the strong relief. There are no specific endpoints to the clear-cut axis that traverses it, and the way it is designed nears the threshold of losing control into the natural landscape.
Ecopolis is a city of advanced, “pure” technology applications, a city of ground-breaking arrangements of its technological infrastructures to accommodate the main functions of urban living. The technology triangle overlies the urban fibre, towering over it as its main connecting element. Over the traces of its sides, either above or beneath the ground, all of the city’s infrastructures are arrayed: main water pipes, power grids and telecommunication networks, research centres, hothouses, relay stations, a wind park, the monument of technology.
